Washington, D.C. (February 18, 2017) – Terry O’Sullivan, General President of LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America – made the following statement today regarding President Donald Trump’s nomination of Alexander Acosta:
LIUNA supports President Trump’s nomination of Alexander Acosta to be Secretary of the United States Department of Labor. Mr. Acosta, a son of immigrants, has built a long and distinguished career as a public servant including three presidentially appointed positions. Mr. Acosta served as a member of the National Labor Relations Board and as the Assistant U.S. Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice. He currently serves as the Dean of Florida International University’s Law School. Mr. Acosta has an impressive background with strong credentials and an impeccable reputation.
The Department of Labor is essential to enforcing the laws that protect workers and retirees, from enforcing labor and apprenticeship standards to ensuring safety on the job and stopping wage theft. Mr. Acosta's fairness and respect for justice make him highly qualified to serve as the next Secretary of Labor.
On behalf of the half-million members of LIUNA, I look forward to working with Mr. Acosta to protect and make better the lives of working men and women across America.
