Washington, D.C. (February 1, 2023) – Terry O’Sullivan, General President of LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America – made the following statement today:
LIUNA welcomes the release of the final environmental impact statement on the Willow project and thanks the Biden Administration and the Department of Interior’s Bureau of Land Management for standing up for hard-working building tradesmen and women, including many thousands of LIUNA members in Alaska. This decision will allow the project to advance into the final stage before its development.
The preferred alternative, "Alternative E," for Conoco Phillips' proposed Willow Development Project will not only provide good union jobs for years to come, it will help grow our nation's energy independence. After nearly six years and a lengthy regulatory review process, Willow will soon be able to enter into the construction phase, putting LIUNA members to work. It is imperative, however, that the department uphold its scaled back decision, which includes three construction pads for Willow. ConocoPhillips has signaled that any fewer will ultimately result in terminating the project.
