LIUNA Commends Outgoing Director of Canada's Building Trades Unions and Applauds New Leadership

Washington, D.C. (March 15, 2019) – Terry O’Sullivan, General President of LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America – made the following statement today on the retirement of Robert Blakely and new leadership of Canada’s Building Trades Unions:

The Labor movement owes a debt of gratitude to Robert (Bob) Blakely, who as Director of Canada’s Building Trades Unions (CBTU), served with unswerving commitment and dedication for the last 19 years. Bob has been a fearless advocate for tradesmen and women. His vision and drive helped win policies that improve wages, benefits and safety on the job which will be felt for generations. He is a true labor leader and we wish him a long and healthy retirement.

CBTU has been left in very good hands with new Director Arlene Dunn, who started as Business Manager with LIUNA in New Brunswick and has worked for over 25 years in the building trades. Arlene is a tireless leader with a steadfast commitment to the tradesmen and women she represents. From her service with LIUNA to her position as Deputy Director of the CBTU, she is passionate about advancing the cause of working men and women in the trades.

LIUNA is proud to congratulate Arlene on her new leadership role and we look forward to working in partnership with her for the continued growth of the building trades across Canada.
