Washington, D.C. (August 20, 2021) – Terry O’Sullivan, General President of LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America – made the following statement today:
LIUNA hails this morning’s election of Liz Shuler as the President of the AFL-CIO and Fred Redmond as Secretary-Treasurer. Liz has always been a steadfast champion of working people and a visionary leader who understands the challenges that working men and women face. She has dedicated herself to the cause, purpose, and the mission of the trade union movement from her work as a union organizer with the IBEW rising through the ranks to eventually serve on the AFL-CIO board as Secretary-Treasurer and now serving as President of the Federation.
Fred Redmond is a hard-charging, working-class warrior, who from the beginning of his career as a rank-and-file member of the United Steelworkers and through his decades of service to labor, has never stopped fighting for racial justice and worker justice.
We can have no better leadership team than Liz, Fred, and Tefere to steer the movement forward, strengthen our collective bonds, and guide us through this critical time for workers, their families, and our great nation.
Congratulations to Liz and her team. The strong, proud, and united men and women of LIUNA look forward to working together with the AFL-CIO leadership to improve the lives of America’s working families.
