LIUNA Mourns Passing of Stephen D Bechtel Jr

Washington, D.C. (March 18, 2021) – Terry O’Sullivan, General President of LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America – made the following statement today:

Today, LIUNA mourns the loss of Stephen D. Bechtel, Jr., an icon of the construction industry whose loss touches so many LIUNA brothers and sisters. LIUNA’s long partnership with Bechtel Construction stretches back over a century. Together, we have had the honor of building nationally renowned projects - from the Hoover Dam to the Boston Tunnel, and more recently two nuclear reactors at Plant Vogtle in Georgia.

We are grateful for the strong leadership and the relationship forged during Stephen’s leadership of the Bechtel Company – which has only continued to thrive and grow with his successors, Riley Bechtel, and today with the 5th generation leadership of Brendan Bechtel.

Stephen Bechtel always showed great respect for all of those on the team including the Laborers who had the opportunity to work for him. His place in the history of the great construction leaders of the 20th century is well-earned and he will continue to hold our admiration and that of many tens of thousands of LIUNA members. His legacy will endure.
