Washington, D.C. (April 30, 2021) – Terry O’Sullivan, General President of LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America – made the following statement today:
LIUNA commends the U.S. Senate on passage of S. 914, the Drinking Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Act of 2021. Senators voted 89-2 in favor of the bill, which will put $35 billion over five years toward state water infrastructure programs. Passage with overwhelming bipartisan support, is a welcome sign that lawmakers recognize infrastructure as a public health and safety issue rather than a partisan issue.
The investment authorized in this bill, which is a key plank in the White House jobs and infrastructure plan, will create good family-supporting jobs and help communities focus on upgrading aging water infrastructure and invest in new technologies that improve the safety of drinking water and wastewater systems.
Robust investment in water infrastructure is critical for public health and is also sound policy as our nation recovers from the devastating economic impacts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
LIUNA urges the U.S. House of Representatives to take up this legislation and pass it immediately.
