LIUNA Statement on the State of the Union Address

President Biden Delivered for the American People

Washington, D.C. (March 8, 2024)Brent Booker, General President of LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America – made the following statement today:

President Biden made a clear and determined promise to the American people that he will defend our freedoms, protect good jobs, and continue to strengthen our economy.

Biden restored the economy from the ravages of the pandemic; creating nearly 15 million new jobs in 3 years and bringing unemployment to a 50-year low. Historic job growth has been driven by landmark investment in our infrastructure, energy development, and manufacturing through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act. LIUNA members are benefitting from the investment - building roads, bridges, airports, transit, removing lead pipes from drinking water systems, and building semiconductor chip manufacturing plants.

The President outlined new proposals to bring wages up further and combat inflation - which has already dropped from 9% to 3%. He committed to further reduce health care premium costs, provide a tax credit to offset the cost of high mortgage rates, bring rental costs down, and build 2 million affordable homes. Biden also plans to make billionaires pay their fair share of taxes and restore the enhanced Child Tax Credit to give working families a bigger break. He emphasized his plan for comprehensive immigration reform, while calling on Republicans to stop blocking his border security request to add more security agents, more judges to address the immigration backload, hire more asylum officers, and invest in illegal drug detection.

LIUNA agrees with President Biden that the State of the Union is indeed strong. We are proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with the President to continue the progress we have made together to build the middle-class, create good union jobs, and protect union rights.
