Digital Ad Campaign With Nearly 1 Million Video Views, Union Hall Discussions Across the Nation, 50,000 Letters to Congress Are Part of Effort
Washington, D.C. (Sept. 24, 2021) – As the U.S. House approaches its voting deadline for passage of a $1.3 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill, LIUNA, the nation’s leading infrastructure union, is ramping up a multi-faceted pressure campaign to pass the bill without further delay.
“This legislation is the single greatest jobs-creating infrastructure investment in generations,” said Terry O’Sullivan, General President of the Laborers’ International Union, whose half-million members work predominantly in the construction industry. “Investments in public infrastructure are the most important issue to the men and women of our union and critically important to the vast majority of Americans.”
Digital ads, including video and streaming audio, are airing on a variety of platforms to reach LIUNA members, Capitol Hill and members of Congress in their home districts. To date the videos have been viewed nearly 1 million times and all ads have generated more than 5 million impressions.
The most recent ad states, “Once in a generation we have the opportunity to do great things, to build America stronger and build a lasting legacy for future generations. That’s why LIUNA members all over America are standing up. This is our moment, a chance to create hundreds of thousands of good union jobs and build a better future for all of us. The time to act is now.” (View the ad here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHfBu9YvWPY)
Another ad features LIUNA members talking about the importance of the infrastructure bill. One member states, “It’s time our government works for us. Let’s pass the bipartisan infrastructure bill now.” (View the ad at: https://www.facebook.com/LaborersInternationalUnionofNorthAmerica/videos/1214204232388600)
The member activism has generated nearly 50,000 letters to Congress pressing for immediate passage of the bill. In addition, members have helped organize more than 100 events, including meetings in Congressional offices, mobile billboarding and circulating petitions.
O’Sullivan said LIUNA members are eager to get to work rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure. They see political jockeying over tying passage of the infrastructure bill to passage of a budget reconciliation bill as irresponsibly playing games with their livelihoods.
“Withholding the infrastructure legislation in an attempt to bootstrap support for the budget reconciliation bill is not acceptable and an abject rejection of responsible government,” O’Sullivan said, and noted the broad popularity of the infrastructure legislation. “Only in Washington, D.C., are the easy decisions made impossible by some.”
LIUNA has a long history of advocating for greater investment in the country’s transportation systems, water resources, energy systems and other infrastructure. In the past, the union has traveled the country with a life-size prop of a bridge fallen on a school bus to draw attention to structurally deficient and obsolete bridges, and has delivered duct tape to members of Congress to illustrate the lack of adequate infrastructure investment.
“This is not a new issue for our union. It has been a decades-long battle,” O’Sullivan said. “Passage of this bill will represent success for all working people and leave a positive legacy for generations to come.”
