Washington, D.C. (October 27, 2023) – Brent Booker, General President of LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America – made the following statement today:
LIUNA applauds the National Labor Relations Board’s (NLRB’s) final joint–employer rule announced today. The rule is an important win for working people that will strengthen our union rights, allowing workers to negotiate for fair wages and working conditions, even when a company uses a subcontractor or staffing agency to evade their responsibilities.
Predatory construction staffing agencies and the project owners who hide behind them will no longer be able to avoid their responsibilities. This rule ensures that union members will have the power to bargain with the company who actually makes changes in the workplace.
LIUNA is grateful to the NLRB for putting the right to collectively bargain back in the hands of workers. While it is only common sense that the company with the power to change workers’ terms and conditions of employment should be the one negotiating with workers, it is thanks to the Biden Administration’s commitment to workers that working men and women have won this important decision.
