Washington, D.C. (January 27, 2023) – Terry O’Sullivan, General President of LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America – made the following statement today:
LIUNA applauds the White House and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s new Service Line Replacement Partnership. The partnership guidelines ensure that the communities most in need of investment in clean drinking water will benefit from the lead service line replacement funding in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The partnership also prioritizes the use of union tradesmen and tradeswomen, ensuring that communities benefit from highly trained and experienced workers and workers benefit from good, family-supporting jobs.
LIUNA members are skilled in lead service line replacement and have been key to efforts in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, and other communities, addressing long-standing lead contamination in water supplies.
The White House’s aggressive plan to address lead pipes will make safe drinking water accessible to every American family. LIUNA looks forward to continuing to work with the White House, EPA, and local municipalities on the lead service line replacement rollout.
